This multidisciplinary course will emphasize the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes. Topics will include patient self-management, appropriate use of technologies, nutrition, behavior modification and pharmacotherapy in the management of this disease. The course will conclude by summarizing new basic science research regarding the pathophysiology and treatment of diabetes.

Students will learn the process of drug discovery and development through specific examples of case studies to better understand the issues facing the challenges of delivering a new drug on the market. Innovating in Health Care (IHC) enables participants to meet and interact with others who are also interested in improving health care. Through case study analysis and application of the “Innovating in Health Care Framework”, this course focuses on evaluating and crafting healthcare startup business models that focus on the six factors that critically shape new healthcare ventures: Financing, Structure, Public Policy, Consumers, Technology, and Accountability. Innovating in Health Care discusses the impact of these factors on business models for three different kinds of innovations: Consumer-focused, technology-driven, and integrations which create scale.
