In 2009, the University of Michigan Department of Emergency Medicine working with global health partners at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Ghana Ministry of Health established the Ghana Emergency Medicine Collaborative. The overall goal of the collaborative is to improve the provision of emergency care in Ghana through the development of physician, nursing and medical student training programs. This NIH-Fogarty International Center funded project also explores the use of new educational modalities such as open educational resources to provide education in Ghana. As part of this project, a 5-day Advanced Emergency Trauma Course (AETC) was constructed utilizing curricular materials from existing U.S. based emergency medicine residencies with modification to the available resources of developing Low-Middle Income Countries (LMICs) such as Ghana. The course, which was designed by University of Michigan and University of Utah Emergency Medicine Faculty includes 20 hours of didactic teaching material in open educational resource format, low-cost simulation models for procedural training and assessment tools. In analyzing fiscal issues, conventional public finance approaches focus mainly on taxation and public spending. Policymakers and practitioners rarely explore solutions by examining the fundamental problem: the failure of interested parties to act collectively to internalize the positive externalities generated by public goods. Public finance is merely one of many possible institutional arrangements for assigning the rights and responsibilities to public goods consumption. This system is currently under stress because of the financial crisis. The first part of the class will focus on collective action and its connection with local public finance. The second part will explore alternative institutional arrangements for mediating collective action problems associated with the provision of local public goods.
The objective of the seminar is to broaden the discussion of local public finance by incorporating collective action problems into the discourse. This inclusion aims at exploring alternative institutional arrangements for financing local public services in the face of severe economic downturn. Applications of emerging ideas to the provision of public health, education, and natural resource conservation will be discussed.
Aggregate supply and demand are key concepts in macroeconomics as they help economists interpret events in the past to help predict the future. This free online course begins by reviewing the biological effects of alcohol on the body, including hangovers, psychological, and physical disturbances. Para preencher esta lacuna, IDBx desenvolveu este curso, o primeiro MOOC disponível em Português para aprender a planejar, projetar e implementar PPPs para projetos de desenvolvimento na América Latina e no Caribe.
Este curso busca dividir experiências de instituições internacionais líderes com a finalidade de ajudar a diminuir lacunas de conhecimento na utilização efetiva das PPPs, oferecendo ideias, soluções e lições aprendidas para lidar com os desafios ou restrições às capacidades técnicas e administrativas do setor público da região. Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) have become an essential instrument for productive, economic, and social growth in Latin American countries and the Caribbean. However, when developed and implemented, those responsible for PPPs' implementation have had limited technical capacity, particularly in the public sector.
In order to address this need, IDB has developed the first MOOC available in Portuguese, to learn how to plan, design, and implement PPPs for development projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This course seeks to share the experiences of leading international institutions to contribute to close the knowledge gaps for the effective use of PPPs, providing ideas, solutions, and lessons learned to face the challenges or limitations of technical and administrative capacity in the region's public sector. The lessons from this course are applicable to different sectors such as infrastructure, health, education, broad band, fiscal sector, and take into consideration national contexts from various countries in the region, including Perú, México, Colombia and Brasil.
For this goal, this course presents selected readings, videos, tutorials and other knowledge products.
The course is based on the Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) Reference Guide Version 2.0, developed and published in 2014 by the IDB, World Bank (WB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Global Health is a new field within public health sciences that integrates the knowledge from fields such as epidemiology, medicine, economy and the behavioral sciences. The main aim of the course, An Introduction to Global Health, is to describe and analyze variation in health between and within countries. This will provide an understanding of causes of the variation. The course will include measurements and determinants of health. Further, the course offers a public health perspective of the global burden of diseases. The course will specifically address: Maternal and Child Health; Sexual reproductive health and rights; Major infectious disease - malaria, TB, HIV, pneumonia; Non communicable disease; Mental health; Disasters; Injuries; Health systems and financing; and Health policy. Analysis will be done from a gender and equity perspective.
The course combines different teaching methods: lectures, self-study, and exercises using gapminder tools (Gapminder.org) to analyze indicators.
