What causes a country’s debt to become unsustainable? How do we assess debt sustainability of public and external debt? How can countries manage their debt portfolio?

This online course aims to provide a comprehensive overview of debt sustainability analysis (DSA) and a medium-term debt management strategy framework adopted by the IMF and the World Bank.

Specifically, the course will: (i) introduce the main principles of debt sustainability; (ii) cover recently updated DSA frameworks — both for advanced and emerging markets and for low-income countries — with an emphasis on country data; (iii) present a medium-term debt management strategy (MTDS) framework; and (iv) illustrate debt sustainability analysis under uncertainty.

Whether you have a professional interest in debt sustainability or debt management or you are simply curious about these issues, we hope that you will join us in this in-depth study of one of the most critical and current issues in economic policy today!

This Islamic Finance and Capital Markets course gives an overview of the Tradability of Sukuk, also known as Islamic bonds, and the development of Islamic Money Markets.

At the end of the course, you will learn about Islamic Money Markets through various Case Studies from Malaysia, Sudan, Pakistan and more.

No previous knowledge is needed.

Why Islamic finance is important for the global financial industry

Islamic finance has grown rapidly, with the trend expecting to continue. Although the concept has been around for much longer, Islamic finance only attained a formal status in Muslim-majority countries in the 1970s. Today, it has become a global phenomenon, eliciting increasing interest around the world, including from non-Muslim countries like the United Kingdom, Luxemburg, Kenya, South Africa, and Hong Kong. Islamic finance has grown into a huge industry with total worldwide assets estimated at about US$2 trillion.

Islamic finance has the potential to contribute to higher and more inclusive economic growth by increasing access of banking services to underserved populations. In addition, it has the potential to promote financial stability due to its risk-sharing feature and its financing being asset-backed and thus fully collateralized. Moreover, Islamic banks offer profit-sharing and loss-bearing accounts that can help mitigate losses and contagion in the event of banking sector distress. These are all indications that Islamic finance is converging to the global finance industry and hence all international finance professionals should be aware of Islamic finance.

As a consumer, you know the price of the food that you consume daily. However, do you know why your food costs this amount and why it is different from the price it’s sold for in other countries? Well, agricultural public policies determine, among other things, the price you have to pay for your food. In fact, did you know that these policies also impact food security and climate change?

Do not miss this chance to compare agricultural policies in Latin America and the Caribbean, and to describe their influence in food security, climate change and regional competitiveness. For you to achieve this, we will introduce you to ‘AGRIMONITOR’, a database created by IDB that contains information about 23 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. AGRIMONITOR will be your ‘right-hand tool’ in the analysis of all these relevant topics.

In addition to the use of AGRIMONITOR, in the course you will find content videos in which specialists from several organizations (IDB, FAO and OECD) will share their knowledge about the topics covered in the course, readings, IDB case studies in which we promote public policy analysis, suggested readings, practical activities that allow you to apply the content you have learnt, and discussion forums where you and your classmates will discuss several topics starting with guiding questions.

Furthermore, if you obtain 90 points out of 100 in the course, you will have the chance to participate in the “Researching with AGRIMONITOR” competition. The winner (or winners) will work on a research project for the IDB Environment, Rural Development and Disaster Risk Management Division, under the conditions stipulated by the Bank. US$10,000 will be available to finance research projects related to MOOC topics.

Join the course and examine which are the best agricultural public policies in your country.

AGRIMONITOR is waiting for you!

*The AGRIMONITOR course is also available in Spanish. To access the Spanish version, click here.

NOTE: We consider the English version and Spanish version of the course to be different courses. Subscription to the Spanish course does not mean that you will also have access to the English version. If you want access to both versions, you will have to subscribe to both versions. The same rule applies to obtain the course certificate. If you obtain the certificate in the Spanish version of the course, it does not mean that you will also obtain the certificate for the English version of the course.

This is a course for those who are interested in the challenge posed by massive and persistent world poverty, and are hopeful that economists might have something useful to say about this challenge. The questions we will take up include: Is extreme poverty a thing of the past? What is economic life like when living under a dollar per day? Are the poor always hungry? How do we make schools work for poor citizens? How do we deal with the disease burden? Is microfinance invaluable or overrated? Without property rights, is life destined to be "nasty, brutish and short"? Should we leave economic development to the market? Should we leave economic development to non-governmental organizations (NGOs)? Does foreign aid help or hinder? Where is the best place to intervene? And many others.

At the end of this course, you should have a good sense of the key questions asked by scholars interested in poverty today, and hopefully a few answers as well.
